What is LED

LED’s are electronic devices that create light from existing electrons. Light is emitted with minimum heat and thus little wastage of energy. Since they are electronic devices, the on-off cycle is almost instantaneous. The normal product today has a half-life rating of 100,000 hours. As there are just over 8,000 hours in a year, a system should lose approximately half their brightness over 12 years. Add to this dimming at night, and the fact that maximum normal usage in any message is less than 60% the life to half brightness, therefore the text should extend even further.

In the past, there has been a concern about the viewing angle of LED’s. Today, parts are available from 15 degrees all the way to 140 degrees, which allows us to view the LED from many angles. Displays can be designed to meet the specific needs of the application or location. LED’s use very little power, as little energy is lost to heat. It is not unusual for an LED sign to use between 2 and 10% of a similarly sized incandescent sign. A single face mono-color LED sign approximately 3’ x 8’ will use under normal operating conditions less than the power to light three 100 watt light bulbs. In the event of a power loss, backup batteries in an LED sign provide short-term power in order to retain information such as messages and time settings. Backup batteries are soldered to the controller board.
